With a pair of businesses and seven beautiful children, married entrepreneurs Caleb and Shayna Chaney are busier than seems possible. And, right now, that’s the sweet spot.

The couple own Chaney Construction in Mariposa and All Weather Supply Co. in Oakhurst, located at 40148 Enterprise Drive in the Enterprise Center off Highway 49. They’re open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All Weather Supply Co. sells roofing, drywall, insulation and miscellaneous specialty items, like custom fireproof vents. Roofing in general and metal roofing in particular are sectors that really took off during the pandemic, and have grown in the face of a demand for fireproof materials in the west.

“There’s been a huge explosion in metal roofing and siding,” said Shayna Chaney, a self-described “roofing nerd” at 39.

Shayna is running the business in Oakhurst while husband Caleb is out in the field with his crew of six to eight men, or working in the Mariposa warehouses. The couple met in Grace Church youth group and were the first of their friends to get married, at age 18.

Owned by Caleb and Shayna Chaney, All Weather Supply Co. is located in the Enterprise Center in Oakhurst.

They have seven kids: Claire (18), Samuel (15), Joy (14), Micah (12), Eliana (10), Lacey (7) and Joshua (4). While Claire lives on her own, the younger Chaneys are homeschooled with the help of Shayna’s parents, retired Mariposa educators Bob and Connie Collins.

Bob and Connie also help with business when the need arises. Caleb’s parents, Craig and Darlene Chaney, currently live out of state, but Caleb got his own contracting start under his father’s watch.

While Shayna says she enjoys the puzzle-like nature of pulling all the components of roofing together for their clientele, part of what she loves best about the family’s business adventures is getting to work with her husband and have the kids close by.

Now, their oldest son, Samuel, works part-time at the business “getting real life experience” and keeping the family tradition alive. That’s good, because Caleb has ideas. Always.

“Caleb is a visionary,” Shayna said. “He never stops thinking and planning.” And she’s there to take care of the many details. “Our personalities work perfectly together.”

Each of the Chaneys is the oldest in their large families of origin, so a big bundle of kids was natural to the newlyweds back in the day. As their young brood was expanding, the Chaneys split Mariposa and moved first to Southern California and then Hawaii, doing mission work.

“We carted the kids around and did everything together, everywhere,” Shayna recalled.

Despite its advantages, those who live in a tropical paradise are sometimes subject to “island fever,” and once that took hold, it was time to return stateside.

“Imagine having a claustrophobic husband when you have a large family on a small island,” Shayna laughed.

But it was in Hawaii that Shayna and Caleb took a personality test which she said “was like an owner’s manual” when it came to understanding her husband, his thought process and action plan.

The Chaneys reestablished themselves in Mariposa where Caleb branched out and added roofing contractor to his resume. And then, almost three years ago, they bought the existing All Weather Supply in Oakhurst and have continued to grow their family business ever since.

“Roofing has changed so much in the last 30 years that most home owners are not up to date with what options are out there,” said Caleb. “Metal is the future of roofing, both more economical in the long run and it’s recyclable. Most homeowners don’t know that there are metal roof options available that cost very close to the same as shingles.”

Some of what sets All Weather apart from the competition is the company’s ability to get product fast as well as making it affordable. They buy the metal coils in a wide variety of colors and profiles and Chaney Construction then creates the panels for roofing and siding right here in the foothills.

“Being able to make panels on site means our customers have more time to get their measurements dialed in,” Caleb shared. “It also gives them access to the actual manufacturer instead of dealing with a big company’s sales team and accounting team. We can solve problems and advise locally.”

Because his small businesses don’t have the excessive overhead of a big firm, Caleb said they can offer lower prices for nearly identical products.

“And our turnaround time is less than half of a big company.”

Helping homeowners get their products fast can sometimes help them keep their homeowners insurance, Caleb added.

“It’s great to be able to help people get out of a difficult situation.”

The couple themselves face the usual challenges of business, from material shortages (they protect themselves by keeping inventory on hand ready to go) and rising costs to personnel changes.

Shayna is currently at All Weather full time and, while she enjoys getting to know customers and helping them find what they need, she would also like to be homeschooling their kids full time.

In the meantime, the young Chaneys are thriving in the day to day, surrounded by a bustling family and engaged in the family business. Even their dogs are busy. They know they’ve got it good and want to share that with the community.

“The best part of our business is getting to see our clients succeed in what they do,” Caleb said.

“It’s really challenging on contractors right now and the demand for their services outpaces their time. If we can make it easier for them to focus on the work and not the materials, then we both win.”
